INTERN: Tsireledzo Maphula
My name is Tsireledzo Maphula,23 years of age. I have an older sister, a young brother and a twin sister. I am from Limpopo-Venda in a village called Mukumbani. I attend Lutheran church, I am a very shy person, dedicated, loving, hard-working and friendly. My grandparents from the maternal side raise me and my twin sister from when we were 8 months until 12 years of age. My grandmother who worked at old age home would organise trip for old people to go to Kruger National park every year. She would take me and my twin sister with. That was the time I realised I wanted to study something related to nature. My passion for animals and environment grew each and every year when we go to Kruger National Park. When we turned 12 my mother who was staying in Gauteng with my other two siblings decided to take us from Limpopo to Gauteng for better education. At first I thought it was going to be difficult to get use to the new place. I had to learn new languages, I had to make new friends but the saddest part was the fact that I would never go to Kruger National Park anymore. It wasn’t as difficult as I thought. First day of school was very exciting, it was 2010 during the fifa World Cup. I was given the Yellow South African T-Shirt that everyone was expected to wear on Mondays and Fridays. We painted the South African Flag, we would draw South African Soccer players and we would sing the national anthem every single day. The school had a different sections of where to place plastic, paper, bottles etc for recycling purposes. Nature conservation became a part of me because my previous school did not have such sections. It was a year to be remembered. I then finished my matric (Grade 12) in 2015. In 2016 I moved to Limpopo to stay with my grandparents. I then realised that my passion and love for nature and environment have not faded away. The right thing to do was to further my studies. In 2017 I returned to Gauteng and enrolled at Tshwane University of Technology for Game Ranch Management. During my studies I often sat with my hands on my head wondering if I will get through my studies without my twin sister on my side. Eventually I had to learn to be independent and believe anything is possible. I completed my studies in 2020 June. Due to financial constraints I couldn’t even make it to the graduation but I was proud of myself. I was happy and grateful for everything. I am currently an intern within the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform, placed at Hanglip Farm. In future I would like to be a nature guide who would focus more on disadvantaged children.
